When you are building a new home or upgrading features in an existing one, you need to plan the layout of every room well. The living room in many homes sees more traffic than most other rooms and becomes a common space to relax in with family and friends.
And if you are renovating the living room in your custom luxury home, simply rearranging the furniture or replacing the accessories isn’t going to suffice. It’s crucial to get every aspect right, place pieces in the right positions, and this requires a considerable amount of thought and planning. Here are a few pointers to decide on the perfect layout for your living room spaces:
#1 Get the plan right
Consider the manner in which you spend time in your living room; how much time do you spend there and do you entertain a lot or not so much? How much furniture do you need here and what type of storage do you need?
If this room sees a lot of traffic, you’d have to ensure there are sufficient seating options. However, it’s important not to overcrowd the space. If on the other hand, you don’t entertain very often, you can place artwork and curios here as the risk of accidents would be far less.
#2 Pick the right furniture pieces
If you find that the sofas, couches and accent chairs don’t fit in well with the décor and floor plan of your living room, you should consider getting custom-made pieces for the place. Ensure that all the furniture is proportioned well and that it complements the size and shape of the room.
#3 The placement of the furniture
The distance between the sofas, and upholstered chairs, arm chairs and loungers should be planned with care. Make sure that there isn’t too much space between the seating elements as that can impact the flow of conversation. Similarly, if the furniture is kept too close together, it can restrict the movement flow in that space.
#4 Take advantage of natural light
Today, many custom-designed homes have very large glass windows and these bring in natural light which adds to the cheeriness and ambience of the living room. Learn to take advantage of natural light. You can create a seating niche near windows, that won’t infringe on the space in the main area of the living room; this is a great way of creating two distinct spaces within a space. When you have a larger number of guests, this area can become the perfect space for a more private conversation, while at others, you can use it as a very comfortable reading nook.
#5 Carpets and rugs
If you have wall-to-wall carpeting you would have to choose the carpet colour with care to make sure it blends in well with the other features in the room. On the other hand if you have a beautiful floor made of hardwood or some natural stone like marble or granite, you can offset the natural beauty of these materials with tastefully-chosen rugs. Place these in strategic positions in different areas of your living room to create the effect and impact you want.
In addition to all these aspects, select a great window treatment and use the right kind of lighting to accentuate textured walls, artwork or décor pieces.
